CWPP Resource Library
Developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan can be a daunting process. In addition, developing projects that will go on to be successfully funded can also be a challenge.
On this page, Fire Safe Sonoma will gather online resources to help you navigate the strange world of federal, state, and local plans and regulations. Our intention is for this page to be a one-stop CWPP Resource Library.
Not interested in developing a CWPP, but do want to include your community fire/fuel mitigation project in the county-wide CWPP (or other local CWPP)?
No problem! We’ll also be providing resources to help you take your project from concept to completion.
This page is a work in process. Check back for more information.
CWPP Resources
There are many ways to develop a CWPP. When the funding mechanism was put in place to allow federal funds to be spent on private lands to do fire/fuel mitigation work, the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003 did *not* create an exhaustive list of requirements on what should go into a CWPP. However, they did stipulate three minimum objectives:
- Collaboration: A CWPP must be collaboratively developed by local & state government representatives, in consultation with federal agencies & other interested parties.
- Prioritized Fuel Reduction: A CWPP must identify and prioritize areas for hazardous fuel reduction treatments and recommend the types and methods of treatment that will protect one or more at-risk communities
and the essential infrastructure. - Structural ignitability: A CWPP must recommend measures that homeowners and communities can take to reduce the ignitability of structures throughout the area addressed by the plan.
Everything else that goes into a CWPP is entirely up to the authors.
Sonoma County has a template (here) and we even have a county-wide CWPP (review it here). We highly encourage you to use this template and/or participate in the county-wide CWPP.
However, if you’d like to learn more, we’ll provide a list of CWPP Resources in this section. In the meantime, check out these links:
